Grass Alternatives
Many people are recognizing that there are beautiful and ecologically important alternatives to grass lawns. Native and drought resistant plants can be used to create attractive habitats for birds and butterflies. Rock gardens can be an interesting and low-maintenance landscaping option.
Grass lawns can be labour intensive. Many residents have replaced some or all of their grass with perennial gardens that don't involve the noise and pollution of mowing, the hassle of regular watering, or the health concerns of pesticide applications.
About Watering
Water is a valuable resource in our community. Unlike many municipalities that take their water from the Great Lakes, 80% of our drinking water comes from underground aquifers. It is important that we protect and preserve our water supply.
In the Region of Waterloo, 2,354 litres of water per person are used on lawns each year. This is enough to fill over 4,700 Olympic-sized swimming pools every year! Just for lawn watering!
By choosing to plant native and drought resistant plants, you substantially reduce or even eliminate the need to water your garden.
